January 30-February 03
Students are working in two groups with two different activities.
For half the class they will work on an activity designed to help them build their understanding of theme. During the second half of the class they will continue to read The Giver and answer questions for each chapter.
January 23-27
We are beginning a new novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry. This book will further our discussion and study of Utopia vs Dystopia.
We will be doing much of our work in groups. This week there are two major groups-A) students seated on the perimeter of the room and B) students in the center.
Students in the center group will work for half the class time in google classroom watching a video and answering questions about Theme. The other half of the group will work with a teacher developing practical skills on Theme through the use of a worksheet activity.
Students on the perimeter will be reading Chapters 1 & 2 of The Giver. After reading the chapters, each student will answer questions on the chapters. The answers will be in complete sentence form (so you do not need to copy the question down). Answers will be written into a composition notebook and kept in your new pocket folder.
On the following day, groups will switch locations and activities.
Questions for Ch 1 & 2 are below.

Videos to introduce Utopia and Distopia

One take away from videos and discussion:
Attempts to create a Utopia have always ended in failure or Distopia.
All of these Utopian attempts failed. Some due to financial hardships. Some due to disagreements within the community.
